Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

I want you to welcome Karen Best Andrésen to the blogosphere! Karen has created a new weblog  Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, and I am as pleased as any blogfather can be!

Karen, who is raising her own grandchildren, already had a static website Raising Your Grandchildren which provides support and information for grandparents who have stepped in and cared for the children of shattered families.

She intended that this site would be a forum where seniors could communicate and realize they were not alone. Her biggest concern was that she could not seem to reach the people she was trying to help.

I told her that blogging would give her the additional visibility that she needed. She started visiting weblogs beginning with the links on this page and has already added links to Ripples and Blue Ridge Muse.  She evidently saw the sense of community that we forge daily, because she has created a weblog worth visiting. Her weblog is full of advice and resources for grandparents caught in a situation they did not anticipate.

I would like you to visit her weblog and make her feel welcome. I know how much that means to a new blogger. 

There are more than 6 million children being raised by their
grandparents, because their parents are unable to care for them. My
nearby neighbors are raising their grandchild, so I have an
appreciation of the problem

The most common cause seems to be alcohol and drug abuse which
produces parents who are mentally ill, incarcerated, or simply
incapable of caring for their children. The grandparents who care for
these children deserve all the support they can get. Pass the word
