It has been 20 days since we adventurously launched ourselves into the great unknown and took on a major home construction project. In that time, we have had eighteen days of 20 degree weather. It has rained once, snowed twice, and the temperature has risen above freezing for only two days.
Today, in the pre-dawn hours of another 20 degree Saturday morning, we are nearing the end of our roof repair project. There are encouraging signs of progress:
-There is five inches of frozen snow resting on our newly shingled roof.
-Our new kitchen skylight provides a great view of birds circling above the house
-The kitchen gleams with new white paint,
-A shiny new vent juts proudly from the outside wall of the house.
We are eagerly awaiting the final hours when the painters leave the kitchen, taking their tools, dust and debris with them.
We are tired of camping out in our living room with no cooking facilities except for a toaster and an electric kettle. Dining out has begun to pall. Palmyra and Charlottesville have few nearby restaurants.
I have learned a lot from this experience. The primary lesson was that I need to do a better job of preparing my long-suffering wife for the uncertainties and insanities of dealing with contractors. It is said that all’s well that ends well, but I still have to find a way to give Gretchen confidence that our next project will go better.
