Even the Mafia understands that purpose is senior to politics&#8230; \ud83d\ude42 <\/p>\n<p>If you have ever wondered what it would be like to have more people gaming the system than actually <em>DOING ANYTHING<\/em>, you can use the United Nations as your shining example.<\/p>\n<p>From Bosnia to Ruwanda to Iraq to the tsunami disaster, the UN has consistently paid more attention to appearances than useful <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/americas\/892592.stm\">production<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>For an on the scene report from insiders in the Foreign Service, you must read the <a href=\"http:\/\/diplomadic.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/unbearable.html\">Diplomad<\/a>. You may see why it has become an essential part of my morning news gathering.<\/p>\n<p>I am glad that the US is finally taking steps to make the UN clean up its act with a <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.washingtontimes.com\/articles\/print.php?StoryID=20041207-122108-1034r\">resolution<\/a> asking for Kofi Annan to resign and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.gov\/apps\/list\/press\/az06_flake\/041007duelfer.html\">bill to cut UN funding<\/a> if it doesn&#8217;t cooperate with the Oil for Food investigation.
