{"id":1162,"date":"2005-01-04T21:38:19","date_gmt":"2005-01-05T02:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/example.org\/verio_a_company"},"modified":"2005-01-04T21:38:19","modified_gmt":"2005-01-05T02:38:19","slug":"verio_a_company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/makingripples.com\/?p=1162","title":{"rendered":"Verio &#8211; a company out of touch with customers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote an earlier post, <a href=\"http:\/\/ripples.typepad.com\/ripples\/2004\/09\/clueless_isps_i.html\">Clueless ISPs<\/a>&#8230; about Verio&#8217;s attempt to collect money for unauthorized charges.<\/p>\n<p>Verio ignored my emails and only went away when my credit card company agreed that Verio&#8217;s business practices were not appropriate and reversed the charges.<\/p>\n<p>Months goes by, then I got a letter from a Verio minion who is pretending to be a bill collection agency. <\/p>\n<p>I write a brief explanation why the bill is invalid. I use one and two syllable words and don&#8217;t get into a short version of Business Law 101 and don&#8217;t go into the essential parts of a valid contract (which are all missing, by the way.) I merely state:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If you had read my previous emails, you would know that you are trying to collect for services that were not authorized, were not wanted, and have not been delivered.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If you persist in attempting to run this tired old scam<br \/>\nfurther, you will find a complete discussion continuing on my weblog. I<br \/>\nwill happily post excerpts from our correspondence in subsequent<br \/>\nessays, with copies sent to Verio&#8217;s management team. I am sure they<br \/>\nwill appreciate further airing of their &quot;customer friendly&quot; billing<br \/>\npractices.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Verio&#8217;s automatic, non cancelable renewal of domain<br \/>\nregistrations does not hold water with credit card companies and it<br \/>\nwill not stand up in small claims court.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Another month goes by and I get another letter from the same minion.<br \/>\nNot a touch of intelligence or personal involvement. (Probably<br \/>\ngenerated by some artificial intelligence program. Dear (Your Name<br \/>\nHere), we regret&#8230;.)<\/p>\n<p>The letter does not acknowledge my correspondence, just attempts to<br \/>\nescalate the matter by telling me that this may affect my future<br \/>\nrelations with Verio Web Hosting. <\/p>\n<p>It already has&#8230;.:)<\/p>\n<p>I have already shifted some of my accounts from Verio to other ISPs<br \/>\nwho are more responsive and much less expensive. I guess it&#8217;s time to<br \/>\nmove the rest. <\/p>\n<p>Verio used to have great tech support and I have been with them ever<br \/>\nsince they bought up best.com, my first ISP in the early days of the<br \/>\nweb. Unfortunately for Verio, their acquisition by NTT has not improved<br \/>\ntheir customer service.<\/p>\n<p>In their quest to become the world&#8217;s largest operator of Web sites<br \/>\nfor businesses and a leading provider of global IP solutions, they have<br \/>\ntaken their eye off what it takes to maintain relationships with<br \/>\ncustomers.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to the 21st century, Verio. Business are all about conversations.
