When you are in a company, a country, or a relationship that is not<br \/>\nworking and offers no prospect of ever working for you, you can always<br \/>\nvote with your feet.<\/p>\n<p>I personally prefer working to improve things, but have occasionally chosen to vote with my feet. I don&#8217;t give up easily, but there are times when you cannot improve a situation, no matter how hard you try. Then it is time to move on, or you are helping to perpetuate the situation.<\/p>\n<p>The expression originally was applied to the emigration of individuals from one country to another that offered more opportunity. It is the ultimate solution in a relatively free society. It is an expression, when Googled, which turns up some fascinating tidbits:<\/p>\n<p>There is a site <a href=\"http:\/\/votewithyourfeet.com\/philosophy.html\">votewithyourfeet.com<\/a><br \/>\nwhich promotes the idea of &quot;vote with your feet&quot;, because if enough<br \/>\npeople do this, countries will have to improve (compete), or risk<br \/>\nlosing key people to other countries.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>In the UK, a survey of 1,600 workers by totaljobs.com revealed that four in ten employees plan to switch jobs next year. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clearlybusiness.com\/cb\/articles\/nf_11013107244392.jsp\">Career-driven workers &#8216;voting with their feet&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An article in the Christian Science Monitor would seem to indicate<br \/>\nthat Japanese women are voting with their feet when it comes to<br \/>\nselecting spouses. The article is titled: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/2004\/1206\/p01s04-woap.html\">What Japanese women want: a Western husband<\/a>. It begins:<em><br \/>\nThe Japanese government wants women like Taeko Mizuguchi to get married<br \/>\nand start doing something about the nation&#8217;s plunging birthrate. But<br \/>\nshe&#8217;s not interested. At least, not if her prospective husband is<br \/>\nJapanese.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A growing number of Japanese women are giving up on their male<br \/>\ncounterparts, and taking a gamble that looking abroad for love will<br \/>\nbring them the qualities in a partner that seem rare at home. Mr.<br \/>\nRight, as the hope goes, is often an American or European, a man<br \/>\nappreciative of a wife&#8217;s career and more of a partner in daily tasks.<\/p>\n<p>In another situation, closer to home, disgruntled US voters, unhappy<br \/>\nwith the results of the recent election are considering moving to<br \/>\nCanada. This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldtribune.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20041114\/COLUMNIST23\/411140506\/0\/COLUMNIST\">article<\/a> in the National Review Online shows why they might want to reconsider.<\/p>\n<p>On a sadder note, Christians of Iraq are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nineveh.com\/Christians%20of%20Iraq%20are%20Voting%20with%20their%20Feet.html\">voting with their feet<\/a> and leaving the country.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you are successfully handling the challenges of your life and<br \/>\nare not considering voting with your feet any time soon. But, if you<br \/>\nreally have to do so, you can take heart in the fact that this country<br \/>\nwas settled by people who voted with their feet. It is not the end of<br \/>\nthe world at all.
