{"id":31,"date":"2012-05-08T08:16:34","date_gmt":"2012-05-08T12:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/example.org\/stupid-in-america"},"modified":"2012-05-08T08:16:34","modified_gmt":"2012-05-08T12:16:34","slug":"stupid-in-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/makingripples.com\/?p=31","title":{"rendered":"Stupid in America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, Fox News ran a story by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/on-air\/stossel\/blog\/2012\/05\/04\/stupid-america-sunday-9pm-et-fnc\">John Stossel called Stupid in America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This graph shows what many of you have suspected all along. that the US education system is broken. <strong><em>The price of education has tripled in the last 40 years, but the test scores have barely changed. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/ripples.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d8341bfac253ef0168eb4fb235970c-800wi\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"STOSSEL_CHART_COST_OF_AN_EDUCATION\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341bfac253ef0168eb4fb235970c\" src=\"http:\/\/ripples.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d8341bfac253ef0168eb4fb235970c-500wi\" style=\"width: 500px;\" title=\"STOSSEL_CHART_COST_OF_AN_EDUCATION\" \/><\/a><br \/>You can see that the increased spending has produced no change in standardized test scores.<\/p>\n<p>An abbreviated video of John Stossel&#39;s show is below. In it, he compares typical unionized schools to charter schools. You can begin to appreciate why parents do everything possible to get their kids in a charter school.<\/p>\n<p>The charter schools appear to focus on quality of education while the  unionized schools focus on preservation of teachers benefits.&#0160; Watch the  video and see what you would prefer for your children.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XEV-H1dXfBg?feature=player_embedded\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Observe the excuses  made by the people in the education system defending the fact that  there\u2019s no products coming out of the \u201cstandard\u201d education system. &#0160;<\/p>\n<p>One public school educator responds to Stossel&#39;s questions this way::<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #bf005f;\"><strong>Stossel:<em>\u201cCity schools are terrible because of unions like yours.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #bf005f;\"><strong>Educator:<em> \u201cOur test scores are not what we (pause) choose to focus on.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #bf005f;\"><strong>Stossel:<em> \u201cBut how do you know if they\u2019re learning anything?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #bf005f;\"><strong>Educator:<em> \u201cI know my kids are learning when I look in their eyes.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You might well ask yourself<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>, &quot;How will a possible employer be able to tell if they learned something?\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A longer version of the Stupid in America video is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=yrUBIsFF4fg#%21\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week, Fox News ran a story by John Stossel called Stupid in America.
