\nThanks and Praise: I photographed men and women, both Christians and Muslims, placing a cross atop the St. John\u2019s Church in Baghdad. They had taken the cross from storage and a man washed it before carrying it up to the dome.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

A Muslim man had invited the American soldiers from \u201cChosen\u201d Company 2-12 Infantry to the church, where I videotaped as Muslims and Christians worked and rejoiced at the reopening of St John\u2019s, an occasion all viewed as a sign of hope. <\/p>\n

The Iraqis asked me to convey a message of thanks to the American people. \u201d Thank you, thank you,\u201d the people were saying. One man said, \u201cThank you for peace.\u201d Another man, a Muslim, said \u201cAll the people, all the people in Iraq, Muslim and Christian, is brother.\u201d The men and women were holding bells, and for the first time in memory freedom rang over the ravaged land between two rivers. There has been so much unrest in Iraq, that it may take years to reestablish stability, but every journey consists of small steps such as this one. I am grateful to Michael for being there and reporting what he sees. In my opinion, he manages to capture the humanity and inherent decency that underlies all social situations, however awful they appear at first.<\/p>\n
