{"id":708,"date":"2006-06-29T20:49:32","date_gmt":"2006-06-30T00:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/example.org\/the_artist_as_a"},"modified":"2006-06-29T20:49:32","modified_gmt":"2006-06-30T00:49:32","slug":"the_artist_as_a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/makingripples.com\/?p=708","title":{"rendered":"The artist as a micro-business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It recently dawned on me that our local artists could profit from the experience of thousands of micro business owners who have harnessed technology to reach and interest prospective customers.<\/p>\n<p>I am using the term &quot;artists&quot; to include artists, sculptors, musicians, and artisans of every persuasion who create beauty which evokes an emotion in the hearer or beholder.<\/p>\n<p>Here are two concepts you might want to consider:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Art is the creation of an emotional impact, whatever the medium used. <\/p>\n<p>Business, on the other hand, is the <em>art<\/em> of exchanging goods or services with a customer for money, support, or viable exchange of some kind.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Marrying art and business is a difficult task and is successfully achieved only by individuals who understand both. <\/p>\n<p>Skilled artists who do not have a business orientation may only be<br \/>\nable to achieve economic viability when they have access to galleries<br \/>\nand other retail outlets which handle the tasks of promotion and sales<br \/>\nfor them. <\/p>\n<p>Artists who sell their wares at craft shows and wine festivals<br \/>\nquickly learn that the commission paid to galleries and retailers is<br \/>\nquite reasonable when compared to the cost and effort of selling<br \/>\ndirectly.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, competent artists with studio showrooms have the<br \/>\neternal problem of attracting customers to their often isolated rural<br \/>\nlocations.<\/p>\n<p>After observing successful and unsuccessful artists for the past<br \/>\nfour years, I see that some traits and behaviors seem to lead to viable<br \/>\nbusinesses and I feel that these behaviors can be learned without<br \/>\ncompromising artistic integrity.<\/p>\n<p>To give you some food for thought, an artistic micro business has a<br \/>\nbuilt-in advantage over almost every other form of small business. It<br \/>\nis unique in that it is generally newsworthy on several levels because<br \/>\nof its entertainment value.<\/p>\n<p>I will expand on this theme in future posts because I feel strongly<br \/>\nthat a strong and healthy artistic community can infuse new life into<br \/>\nthe local and regional economy. <\/p>\n<p>You might want to read some of my earlier <a href=\"http:\/\/ripples.typepad.com\/ripples\/microbusiness\/index.html\">posts<\/a><br \/>\nabout the importance of micro businesses and how they work. I would<br \/>\nhope that the idea of artist as a micro-business owner might inspire<br \/>\nsome of you who are artists to look at yourselves as a brand and even<br \/>\nexplore the idea of what marketing is all about.<\/p>\n<p>It isn&#8217;t all that complicated, as you will see.
