{"id":802,"date":"2006-03-04T09:44:03","date_gmt":"2006-03-04T14:44:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/example.org\/things_could_be"},"modified":"2006-03-04T09:44:03","modified_gmt":"2006-03-04T14:44:03","slug":"things_could_be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/makingripples.com\/?p=802","title":{"rendered":"Things could be worse&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You are getting older and your job may be in jeopardy, but at least you aren&#8217;t living in Belarus and campaigning against president Lukashenka. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.br23.net\/en\/2006\/03\/03\/kazulin-belarus-elections\/\">Alexander Kazulin<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.milinkevich.org\/\">Alexander Milinkevich<\/a> find that the KGB is doing their best to ensure the election results will be unanimously in favor of Lukashenka, who has the reputation of being &quot;Europe&#8217;s last dictator&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Public beatings and intimidation by uniformed goon squads mark the end of any hope for a democratic election process.<\/p>\n<p>As is too often the case these days, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.br23.net\/en\/2006\/03\/01\/kgb-reuters-bias\/\">Reuters<\/a> and some of the mainstream media are parroting the KGB party line and staunchly supporting the dictator&#8217;s actions.<\/p>\n<p>What is it about Reuters and the rest of these MSM guys? They get handed a prepared statement and promote it as news? Don&#8217;t they realize there are bloggers fact-checking them at every turn?<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately Steve Rosenberg of the BBC is painting a different picture. Read his article, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/europe\/4770144.stm\">Pomp and Punch-ups in Belarus<\/a>. He says being in Minsk this week is like being back in the USSR.<\/p>\n<p>Strike Belarus off your list of quaint vacation places unless you have a taste for dictatorships.
