Every religion, cult, or even business enterprises have definitions for things that indicate you are doing something wrong. The problem arises when the definition is incomplete!
The definition will describe a condition that is quite observable and attribute it to something that is not the real cause! When you are told to handle that supposed cause, it acts as a “wrong indication” and you will get very upset and will not recover from it because the solutions that are given to you do not work! This is why people leave Scientology and many other belief systems. The solutions they are told to use do not work in some cases and the organization does not recognize the inadequacy of the definition.
Let’s take the condition called a roller coaster by Scientologists. The definition is clear and accurate in a limited way, but it is woefully incomplete! Here is the original definition from the book Introduction to Scientology Ethics:
“A roller coaster is always connected to a suppressive person and will not get steady gain until the suppressive is found on the case. Suppress — to squash, to sit on, to make smaller, to refuse to let reach, to make uncertain about his reaching, to render or lessen in any way possible by any means.”
Scientology handling requires you to disconnect from this suppressive person, even if it is your grandmother or other family member, The real problem is that you are connected to a vast number of disembodied spirits whose mission seems to be to make you uncertain about your decisions and your ability to reach for solutions. Disconnecting from your grandmother will not address the real problem which is the unhappy spirits you have collected who react to your grandmother by dramatizing some past painful incident.
The point I want to make is that the term roller coaster describes a real condition and many people suffer from it needlessly because they do not know where to look for a solution. When you get sick or your stats crash, you need to look for people in your environment who are suppressing you, but if there is no one who fits that description, you need to look for the disturbed spirits in your vicinity and handle them.
