Is cancer really necessary?

When I was younger, death from cancer was an uncommon event.

We didn’t have vitamins, drugs were quite primitive, diets were not particularly well balanced or nutritious, and we used cleaning solutions, cosmetics and soaps that contained whatever manufacturers cared to use.

In our brave new world, we have vitamins and prescription drugs galore, recommended guidelines for diets and a vast structure of federal agencies to protect us from harmful foods and drugs. However, cancer has become a major threat to be reckoned with. Continue reading

It’s always hard to say goodbye

We lost a good friend a few weeks ago and it’s taken me some time to gather my thoughts so I could honor her memory properly.

Paula discovered she had an inoperable cancer fourteen years ago, but she did not let it stop her from enjoying life to the fullest extent possible. She was always the life of any party and I never heard ask for sympathy or complain about her lot in life.

She was a fount of knowledge about a lot of subjects, but unlike others in poor health, her illness was not her primary topic of conversation. In fact, as I recall, she rarely spoke of it unless someone asked about her current treatment.

All’s well that ends…

In any project there are special indicators that signify it’s really over.

In the world of business, project completions were clearly delineated by unmistakable signs. At some companies, it was the awarding of commemorative T-shirts. At other companies, it was the shift from non-stop activity to quietly orchestrated layoffs. Any other activity could be safely disregarded as a minor distraction, because there was more to be done.

On the home front, as in our recent roof repair project, the signals are more confusing.
