A new feature: What kind of blog is this?

I visited a weblog the other day which suggested that blogs should have an easily located explanation of what kind of blog they were. The idea was that this would let first-time visitors see if the blog was the kind of site they would feel comfortable bookmarking. I thought it made a lot of sense.

We have all visited sites because of a particularly interesting article and found to our dismay that some parts of the site were peppered with pictures of bunnies or political rants we didn’t agree with.

So, I created an overview of this site where you can see what to expect. If you look at the top of the left sidebar, you will see the legend: What Kind of Blog is This?

If you click on it, you will open a page that describes the blog in enough detail so you will have no doubts about what you are visiting. Let me know if this new section describes this blog as you know it.  I think this feature helps position this blog because there really is a core purpose under all of the wide-ranging discussions.

If you would like to advise me on branding and positioning for better effect, please have at it. I want to make visiting this site as easy and entertaining as possible.

  1. Nice mission statement. I thought about one for my blog but the only thing I could come up with was:

“Photography, musings and rants about anything I damn well please.”

Great idea, David. It certainly is an alternative to “100 things about me” which I tend to look for to get some clues as to what someone’s blog is focused on.

This is a nice idea, but I think the corollary in real life is that you often have to spend some time with a person to “know what kind of person this is.” I think blogs can work just fine this way as well, but offering up a short statement to guide people is probably a nice thing to do.

I guess mine would have to say: “Rambling incoherently about whatever crosses my mind. Occasionally illustrated by photographs. Lots and lots of photos sometimes.”
