What doesn’t kill you…

Personal attacks by anonymous trolls are upsetting, but there is a bright side to everything in this world. Such attacks, no matter how vile and unfounded, provide an immense amount of new source data for your blog. This kind of attack will put an end to the most terminal case of beal.

A fellow who prefers to be known as notGeorge has come under attack by an anonymous supporter of his political opponent. I have seen political attacks, but this one sets some kind of a record for slime content. Local elections make the presidential campaign look positively genteel.

A tantalizing preview of spring

This part of Virginia has been holding on to the winter cold as if a new ice age were coming. Having spent the last half of my life in balmy climates, my biological calendar needs to be reset.

It’s hard to remember how long it takes Spring to arrive when you have spent 15 years in Ft Lauderdale, 15 years in Redondo Beach, and 7 years in Silicon Valley. Spring in those parts comes a few weeks after Christmas and winter is a few short months of sweater weather.

Today was another teaser. I was able to open the shop doors and enjoy the breeze while I worked on a new project. I was still assembling legs for a new set of folding workbenches when the schoolbus stopped and disgorged a bunch of singing and chattering neighborhood children. They quickly dispersed, but their colorful outfits and chirpy voices left the impression that a bunch of finches had come and gone.

Appeasement and Neville Chamberlain

Appeasement is a strategy that has been employed throughout history by weaker nations facing destruction by stronger nations. Animals do this frequently and signify their inability to cope by rolling on their backs with their throats exposed.

Unfortunately, terrorists do not have the basic decency of animals. Their motivation is destruction, not domination.

The most well-known case of appeasement is the appeasement of Adolf Hitler’s Germany by United Kingdom Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain’s government in the late 1930s. Chamberlain, a good and dedicated man, truly believed he had secured “Peace in Our Time” through discussion instead of by force of arms. When he returned from his meeting with Hitler, he was celebrated as a hero who had saved England from destruction.
