We get what we reward

I was reminded of that again yesterday when I saw a squirrel emerging from a twenty gallon pail of bird seed. I have been using a discarded chip collector to store bird seed, but it has become a training device for adventurous squirrels because I failed to seal it properly. The squirrels have learned that they can get access to unlimited amounts of birdseed by negotiating a maze of 4 inch diameter tubing with right angle turns and a metal baffle.

So how is it that I am rewarding them? I chase them away when I see them, but I have failed to take the time to seal off the openings. Banging on the lid of the can startles them and they shoot out of the tubes to safety, only to return minutes later when I return to my workshop. As a result, I have unwittingly trained at least two squirrels to carry out Mission Impossible type raids on my birdseed supply.

Only a Pet Owner Can Truly Appreciate This

Very early this morning I read this treasure in Indigo Insights. It was originally penned by “Don from the mountains of Virginia” who sounds like he should have his own weblog.

After I slept a few more hours and emerged with cup of tea in hand and glasses in place, Gretchen insisted I must read a hilarious essay on Fragments. UPDATE: I received a comment from Indigo Insights and Googled “The dishes with the paw prints are yours.”

There are 482 listings containing that phrase, some dating back to August.

Thanksgiving Leftovers

I am sitting here typing this with one hand, because I have a cat draped across my shoulder. Sherman is hanging on for dear life, trying to reassure himself that we have really returned and all is well again.

He and Buffy and the deer have all been well cared for by our cat sitter. She comes in twice a day to feed all who are hungry and does a great job. It is such a pleasure to arrive home and find an account of how the cats and deer have been doing in our absence.

We had a visit from an eight point buck just before dark today. He is the first we have seen since hunting season began. I think he has finally realized that this is a no hunting area. Tonight there has been a steady stream of deer visiting the feeding station. I could see their eyes glowing in the darkness while I was barbecuing steaks for supper.

It’s time to celebrate…

Another year is winding down and we begin the holiday season with a feast modelled on three days of feasting that took place in Plymouth Plantation in the year 1621. Unlike the early settlers, we are not being joined by … Continue reading
